GUIDELINES FOR FABRIC CARE (DUPIONI SILK)

Fabric Care Guide

  • Silk is a natural fiber, spun by the silkworms. It is vulnerable to sun rot and fading, finished project should be kept out of direct sunlight.
  • Dupioni silk requires low heat setting and can be damaged if pressed at too high a temperature.
  • Fabric should be pressed from the back and always tested on a small area first to establish optimum heat setting.
  • It should be Dry Cleaned only, never washed.
  • It is a soft textile prone to fraying, it will benefit from a lightweight fusible interfacing.
  • Interfacing should be applied with medium heat setting before the fabric is cut. A press cloth is recommended and a light water spray. Blotting motion with the iron works best, avoid sliding the iron on the fabric.
  • Silk is a fine fiber with low density or loft. By nature, it has tendency to slide when sewn. A shortened stitch length is useful for keeping looser weave in place. A Microtex sharp 80 or 90 size needle will work best for satisfactory results.
